A Creative Dissent: Increasing the Value of Public Cultural HeritageThrough Private Involvement

A dissent (in the noblest sense of the term) has emerged towards a state-centred governance approach for cultural heritage. This dissent has manifested itself in a proliferation of civil society activities and more citizen-based organizations, including associative entities or private cooperatives and self-entrepreneurial organisations. This chapter gives an overview of the private institutions and acts that are increasingly actuating dissent against the dominance of public governance in the field of cultural heritage. It spotlights the importance of the Faro Convention, its implementation in Italy, and uses case studies of dynamic private initiatives for cultural heritage, including for the “Sistine Chapel of Piedmont”, the Casale dei Cedrati, and the Museo Sannitico in Campobasso, and more.
