This essay aims to highlight the contributions of neomaterialism and feminist posthumanism to ground philosophy of language into matter. In its first part, the essay summarizes the salient points of neomaterialism and feminist posthumanism, tracing their common Spinozian monist roots and poststructuralist antecedents. This helps understanding how dualism, separating mind and body as language and matter, fosters abstractions and universalisations. The second part focuses on neomaterialist and posthumanist contributions relevant at the times of hyper-redundancy in human communication and the spread of “new visualization technologies” that tend to abstract visages and passions from matter. The final part enquires what happens when studying languages where they have always been, in the transpecies matter of the world, attempting to disperse the visage into more-than-human bodies and moving beyond faciality to listen to the sea’s becoming.
