The present paper offers a preliminary survey of the theme of the breath or vital air (prāṇā) in the Bhagavadgītā, the devotional poem contained within the Mahābhārata, through two of its more authoritative comments, the first one inspired by the upanisadic corpus, the second one by the tantric context, namely the Bhagavadgītābhāṣya by Śaṅkara and the Bhagavadgītārthasaṅgraha by Abhinavagupta, together with a synthetic contextualization of both commentaries.

Abstract

The present paper offers a preliminary survey of the theme of the breath or vital air (prāṇā) in the Bhagavadgītā, the devotional poem contained within the Mahābhārata, through two of its more authoritative comments, the first one inspired by the upanisadic corpus, the second one by the tantric context, namely the Bhagavadgītābhāṣya by Śaṅkara and the Bhagavadgītārthasaṅgraha by Abhinavagupta, together with a synthetic contextualization of both commentaries.
