This paper focuses on Ino / Leucothea in Latin poetry. Starting from the debated question of what drives her to throw herself into the sea with Melicertes, Ovid and the poets of the Imperial age (Seneca, Valerius Flaccus, and Statius) must engage with a complex mythological tradition in which Ino is both the mater dolorosa and the stepmother who conspires against Athamas’ children from his first marriage.
