Ossetian Iranologist V. I. Abaev (1900–2001) was among N. Ya. Marr’s famous disciples, and the latter early singled him out among his students, which ultimately led to Abaev’s employment at the Japhetic Institute. The author publishes documents from the N. Ya. Marr collection in the St. Petersburg Branch of the RAS Archive, highlighting individual aspects of the interaction between two major and unique representatives of Russian-Soviet Caucasian studies, including the question of N. Ya. Marr’s conceptual influence (or its absence) on the formation of the scientific worldview of the young V. I. Abaev.
