Roberto Beneduce is a leading figure of contemprary ethnopsychiatry and an anthropologist with broad fieldwork experience in Subsaharian Africa (Mali, Cameroon, Uganda, Mozambique) as well as a solid theoretical background that surpasses by far the (for him complementary) fields of psychology and ethnology. Roberto Beneduce studied psychiatry and anthropology in Italy and France, completed his doctorate under the supervision of Marc Augé at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, became professor of anthropology in Turin (Italy), and in 1996 founded the Frantz Fanon Center in Torino and Napoli (the clinical branch of the Frantz Fanon Association), which offers psychotherapeutic treatment and psychosocial support for patients with a migrant background, refugees, and victims of torture or political persecution. He is the author of remarkable publications on anthropological, ethnopsychiatric and geopolitical subjects, such as Frontiere delle identità e della memoria (1996), Trance e possessione in Africa (2002), Etnopsichiatria: sofferenza mentale e alterità fra storia, dominio e cultura (2007), Archeologia del trauma (2010), and Frantz Fanon: Psychiatry and Politics (2019).
