This essay studies Torquato Tasso’s annotations to Plotinus’ "Enneads", in the 1540 edition in Latin translation with commentary by Marsilio Ficino. Like all Tasso’s annotations, they are a very useful source for understanding the poet’s thought and culture and for interpreting his works. Plotinus, commented by Ficino, represented one of the sources Tasso drew on most for his thought and poetry, benefiting in particular from Ficino’s syncretism, which interprets Hellenistic Neo-Platonism in a Christian direction. The aim of the research is to illustrate the ways in which Tasso as a reader interacted with the original text, in order to understand first of all the reading times, and then the ways in which the source was used and reused in his works, particularly those of his maturity.

Abstract
This essay studies Torquato Tasso’s annotations to Plotinus’ "Enneads", in the 1540 edition in Latin translation with commentary by Marsilio Ficino. Like all Tasso’s annotations, they are a very useful source for understanding the poet’s thought and culture and for interpreting his works. Plotinus, commented by Ficino, represented one of the sources Tasso drew on most for his thought and poetry, benefiting in particular from Ficino’s syncretism, which interprets Hellenistic Neo-Platonism in a Christian direction. The aim of the research is to illustrate the ways in which Tasso as a reader interacted with the original text, in order to understand first of all the reading times, and then the ways in which the source was used and reused in his works, particularly those of his maturity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
