Abstract

This paper investigates the logic of compatibility as a ground for the logic of conditionals. We identify a family of principles expressing key properties of compatibil- ity, which can be coherently ordered. Assuming that conditionals are definable in terms of incompatibility—the negation of compatibility—each of the principles identified yields corresponding principles governing conditionals. Clarifying these derivability relations pro- vides a new perspective on several existing accounts of conditionals.
