The paper aims to investigate and enhance the role of married women in migration paths of families belonging to low and middle classes in eighteenth-century Turin. According to a current commonplace in the literature on the topic, men had a leading role in migrations; the husband acted such as the breadwinner of the family while the wife (and the children) were expected merely to follow him. On the contrary, this paper provides evidence of the fact that married women played a crucial role in the achievement of a migration project. Indeed, by the means of their work, the employment of their dowry and their social relations, they actively contributed in planning the migration and in the settlement process of their household in the new environment.

Abstract
The paper aims to investigate and enhance the role of married women in migration paths of families belonging to low and middle classes in eighteenth-century Turin. According to a current commonplace in the literature on the topic, men had a leading role in migrations; the husband acted such as the breadwinner of the family while the wife (and the children) were expected merely to follow him. On the contrary, this paper provides evidence of the fact that married women played a crucial role in the achievement of a migration project. Indeed, by the means of their work, the employment of their dowry and their social relations, they actively contributed in planning the migration and in the settlement process of their household in the new environment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
