The loss of motion is common after fractures and dislocation of the elbow. The causes of contracture are different and they can be classified as: 1) extrinsic causes (periarticular adhesions with shortening and fibrosis of the capsule and collateral ligaments); 2) intrinsic causes (intrarticular adhesions, articular cartilage injuries, loose bodies and non-anatomic consolidations). Surgical treatments are related to the causes of post- traumatic contracture. It is possible to choose among different surgical procedures: arthroscopy arthrolysis; lateral capsulotomy and open surgical arthrolysis; medial capsulotomy; radial head resection (arthroscopic or open surgical technique); olecranon resection; correction of possible nonunion fractures. Surgical treatment can be appropriate in patients in whom conservative treatment has failed.
