In this essay I analyze the thematic and structural influence of blues and jazz on some representative poems from The Weary Blues, Fine Clothes to the Jew, Fields of Wonder and Montage of a Dream Deferred. My focus is on illustrating the technical and linguistic strategies adopted by Hughes to recreate a musical atmosphere, to suggest the rhythm and mood of the music and to render the oral vernacular tradition of the blues in literary form. The poems selected for consideration are about the experience of listening to a musical performance and the significance of music for the African American community.

Abstract
In this essay I analyze the thematic and structural influence of blues and jazz on some representative poems from The Weary Blues, Fine Clothes to the Jew, Fields of Wonder and Montage of a Dream Deferred. My focus is on illustrating the technical and linguistic strategies adopted by Hughes to recreate a musical atmosphere, to suggest the rhythm and mood of the music and to render the oral vernacular tradition of the blues in literary form. The poems selected for consideration are about the experience of listening to a musical performance and the significance of music for the African American community.File in questo prodotto:
