The purpose of this study is to analyse sleep disturbances as pathological expression of the experiences of separateness and loss in adolescence. Results show that about the half of 45 adolescent subjects admitted in 2000 to the Hospital of adolescence in the Department of Neuropsychiatry of the University of Turin with acute psychiatric problems suffer from sleep troubles. Some clinical cases are described as examples of the difficulties and usefulness of hospital work with adolescents. Pharmacological treatment and psychoanalytic method and model of care constitute an incomparable instrument of comprehension and therapy.
