Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum (Mcc), belongs to the Mycoplasma mycoides cluster, causes sporadic outbreaks of caprine arthritis, mastitis, keratoconjunctivitis, pneumonia and septicaemia throughout the world. These clinical signs are often common to other species of small ruminant mycoplasmas. Since the invariable immunodominant lipoprotein P48 of M. agalactiae and its M. bovis homologue have proven to be specific markers of infection, here we report the identification and characterization of the Mcc P48 homologue and evaluate the diagnostic value of its recombinant form expressed in a prokaryotic system.
