In this paper the notion of non-violence in pâli texts is investigated through the analysis and comparison of the different words for "violence", for example sâhasa, bala, himsâ and vihimsâ. The origin of violence is mental as is born out of an excessive concern for mundane reality; non-violence can be developed cultivating mettâ and karunâ. True and complete absence of violence is only nibbâna.
