The essay is a brief examination of some common roots of conceptions of justice in the three monotheistic religions and of their various approaches to it. The idea of the Covenant is at the centre of the first part of the essay, which is dedicated to the implications of that metaphor in a comparative perspective, as well as its place in the rise of Western constitutional thinking. In this first part, the ambivalence of the notion of justice is explored with regard to the notion of retribution and reconciliation. The second part of the essay examines the practice of justice and the relationship between religion, state authority and the organisation of the administration of justice. The author argues that the different approaches to the administration of religious justice owe much to the contribution of other legal experiences which historically confronted the religious approach to justice.

Abstract
The essay is a brief examination of some common roots of conceptions of justice in the three monotheistic religions and of their various approaches to it. The idea of the Covenant is at the centre of the first part of the essay, which is dedicated to the implications of that metaphor in a comparative perspective, as well as its place in the rise of Western constitutional thinking. In this first part, the ambivalence of the notion of justice is explored with regard to the notion of retribution and reconciliation. The second part of the essay examines the practice of justice and the relationship between religion, state authority and the organisation of the administration of justice. The author argues that the different approaches to the administration of religious justice owe much to the contribution of other legal experiences which historically confronted the religious approach to justice.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
