In this study of McTeague I focus Norris's particular mixture of naturalism and of the grotesque in his representation of the contradictions and the absurdities of certain dominant patterns of behavior and thought in the United States during the late Nineteenth Century, namely, the Cult of True Womanhood, the Myth of the Self-Made Man, Evolution versus Degeneration.
