Abstract

Cyclodextrins act as inverse phase transfer catalysts in the oxidation of methyl ketones by hypochloride (the haloform reaction). The reaction is affected by the choice and the amount of cyclodextrin. The reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions and it provides only the corresponding carboxylic acid as reaction product. No organic solvent is required.
