This book presents an overview of the situation of pig genetic resources in 4 major pig-producing countries of the European Union, namely France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The information gathered in this book serves as a basis for rationalizing the conservation of European pig genetic resources, through a better characterization of the available breeds and an evaluation of their genetic diversity. Conservation policies are also outlined, addressing both live animals and cryopreserved germplasm; in particular recommendations are given for establishing gene banks from local breeds exposed to serious risks of genetic erosion if not complete extinction. This book is divided into twelve chapters/articles divided into four sections: (i) inventory of the pig genetic resources in Europe (primary characterization); (ii) breed evaluations (performances); (iii) evaluation of genetic diversity among European breeds (genetic distances); and (iv) ex situ conservation of pig genetic resources (semen collections).
