S. Bonelli, S. Canterino, F. Barbero, S. Scalercio, E. Balletto. Ecology and conservation of day-flying butterflies in the Mont Blanc SCI and SPZ. Rev. Valdôtaine Hist. Nat., 61/62: 429-440, 2007/2008. In this work we analysed the butterfly communities occurring in the mountain grasslands and pastures in the Mont Blanc area, namely in two Sites of Community Interest (SCI/SIC) and in one Special Protection Zone (SPZ/ZPS). In total, we investigated 7 such communities, both grazed and un-grazed, by repeated transect method. Among the 68 butterfly species observed, Parnassius apollo, Euphydryas aurinia glaciegenita and Maculinea arion are globally threatened and are mentioned in Annexes 2 and 4 of the Habitats Directive. Parnassius apollo is listed also as a CITES Appendix 1 species. We used Parnassius phoebus, a threatened species in the Western Italian Alps, as an “umbrella species” and an indicator of the state of conservation of the wet meadows of the Val Ferret valley floor. The local distribution of Parnassius phoebus and the possible local threats to its conservation have been studied in detail. We provide recommendations for the improvement of the conservation status of the threatened species occurring in the area.
