Data mining studies the problems related to data analysis and extraction of knowledge implicitly stored in massive data sets. This field emerged in the late 1980s as a multidisciplinary field with contributions from the areas of databases, artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks, statistics, pattern recognition, knowledge acquisition, information retrieval, high-performance computing and data visualization. The book, written by some of the main exponents of the database and data mining research fields, discusses the principles and presents data mining from a database perspective. Nevertheless, it includes the necessary notions of statistics, pattern recognition and machine learning.
