Under the gaze of Orpheus: J.M. Coetzee and the writing of the disaster

Resumé Autour du thème de l’indicible dans la littérature des XXe et XXIe siècles, cette contribution met en évidence les relations entre l’œuvre de John M. Coetzee (en particulier Waiting for the Barbarians, 1980, The Master of Petersburg, 1994, Disgrace, 1999, Elizabeth Costello, 1999) et la pensée en premier lieu de Maurice Blanchot, mais aussi de Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Emmanuel Lévinas. Au centre de l’analyse seront le mythe de Orphée et Eurydice et la légende d’Éros et Psyché dans leur corrélations avec les images dérivées de la lumière et de l’obscurité, de vide et de plein, et de la cécité, utilisées dans le romans pour signifier les paradoxes du langage et de la connaissance dans ses rapports avec l’Autre. Abstract Starting from the problem of language in contemporary literature, the present essay explores the relationships between the work of the South African writer John M. Coetzee (especially Waiting for the Barbarians, 1980, The Master of Petersburg, 1994, Disgrace, 1999, Elizabeth Costello, 1999), and the thinking especially of Maurice Blanchot, but also of Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Emmanuel Lévinas. The main focus will concern the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and the tale of Eros and Psyche, related to the images of blankness and those of blindness and sight, taken as symbols of the paradoxical relationship between life and writing, thus implying the ambiguous power exercised by language on the Other.
