In order to define a correct methodical approach to dealing with mobbing, the phenomenon must be defined along with the “mobbing” actions themselves, the subject’s reactions and any signs of damage. To do this, a multidisciplinary approach must be applied, and, although, the most significant roles will be those of the psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors specialised in legal-medical questions, the occupational doctor should be involved. Indeed, the occupational doctor is able to offer a very useful contribution in the form of pertinent “know how” and the management of this phenomenon, particularly during the risk assessment phase. Therefore, the need to set up standardised diagnostic and damage assessment criteria so as to be able to distinguish the real mobbing cases from cases of work conflicts. As literature data have evidenced some limits the psychiatric and psychological techniques have, this methodical approach seems to be difficult to put into practice. Studies carried out by the Occupational Medicine Department in Turin on the diagnostic approach and damage assessment in mobbing actions have confirmed the difficulty in obtaining uniform clinical data, not only within their own structure, but also outpatients presenting previous documentation prepared by other qualified diagnostic centres. Moreover, the purely subjective assessments in absence of “objective” evidence further limits the evaluation strategy.
