This article sets out to analyse the social and symbolic functioning of exhibition criticism by examining the relation between two media contexts: exhibition reviews in specialized journals and contemporary art exhibitions themselves. An analysis of the reviews reveals that, far from being limited to the transmission of the curator’s perspective, the reviews generate an interplay between the points of view of the various actors involved. We will show that these tensions serve to situate the actors and to stabilize the configuration of today’s art. <thus the reviews can be considered as an actual agent responsible for generating the social organization of the exhibition world.

Abstract
This article sets out to analyse the social and symbolic functioning of exhibition criticism by examining the relation between two media contexts: exhibition reviews in specialized journals and contemporary art exhibitions themselves. An analysis of the reviews reveals that, far from being limited to the transmission of the curator’s perspective, the reviews generate an interplay between the points of view of the various actors involved. We will show that these tensions serve to situate the actors and to stabilize the configuration of today’s art.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
