Lilium is one of the horticulturally most important genus for cut flower and pot plant production. The great potentialities of lilies in garden design lies in the great number of species that can adapt to any kind of garden. The introduction and evaluation of new cultivars suitable for urban environment might interestingly extend the choice of ‘urban lilies’ to other parts of Europe. Tissue culture is a method of propagating plants in the laboratory. Tiny amounts of plant tissue are placed in a sterile nutrient medium, to which growth hormones are added to induce the cells to multiply and differentiate until they form tiny bulblets. The material used to initiate a tissue culture usually comes from bulb scales, but stem segments with an internode, or flower buds, can also be used.
