Numerical experiments with a two-dimensional model have been performed to study diurnal urban circulation and heat islands in calm conditions. Vertical structures of rural and urban boundary layers, heat island intensities and circulations are examined in different conditions of stability, surface heat fluxes and city width. A simple expression to predict diurnal evolution of the urban-rural temperature difference is proposed.
