The European Council Directive 1999/105/CE deals with the marketing of forest reproductive material. One of the most important features of the act is the definition of Regions of Provenance: their identification plays a basic role for a rational management of activities linked with forest trees propagation, including afforestation and in situ genetic preservation. The paper provides an overview on legislative and methodological aspects related to Regions of Provenance and gives general information useful for a better comprehension of forthcoming articles, that will deal with single forest species.

Abstract

The European Council Directive 1999/105/CE deals with the marketing of forest reproductive material. One of the most important features of the act is the definition of Regions of Provenance: their identification plays a basic role for a rational management of activities linked with forest trees propagation, including afforestation and in situ genetic preservation. The paper provides an overview on legislative and methodological aspects related to Regions of Provenance and gives general information useful for a better comprehension of forthcoming articles, that will deal with single forest species.
