Logic and Method. Georg Friedrich Meier’s presence in the «Discipline of pure reason» The paper shows that Kant’s original notion of «Discipline» in the Doctrine of Method of the first Critique comes out from his long-lasting reflection on a passage of Georg Friedrich Meier’s logic about the difference between doctrine and discipline. Considering the tight connection that Meier established between discipline – as a specific form of knowledge – and method – as set of rules that gives knowledge the proper order and unity of the science – Kant states the new meaning of the notion, which is very different from the traditional one that can be found in 18th century German philosophy. Discipline with its peculiar negative connotation in the sense of a necessary limitation of the epistemic pretences of reason becomes a terminus technicus of Kantian transcendental philosophy. Kant’s reflection on discipline even contributes to the development of the idea of a critique of reason, which has a first negative aim as «treatise of method», introductory to any form of metaphysics. This analysis confirms once more the central role that Meier’s chapter on the Lehrart plays in Kant’s Methodenlehre in general, and in particular in its section on the «Discipline of pure reason».

Abstract
This analysis confirms once more the central role that Meier’s chapter on the Lehrart plays in Kant’s Methodenlehre in general, and in particular in its section on the «Discipline of pure reason».File | Dimensione | Formato | |
