The comparative analysis of the formulae “the gift from the Mousai” / “the gifts from the Mousai” allows a more meaningful interpretation of Ar - chilochus’ fr. 1 West. The “gift from the Mousai”, in particular, is coherent with the traditional tales about Archilochus’ initiation as it is included in Mnesiepes’ inscription, which offers solid grounds to support the following hypothesis: the narration recorded in the inscription originates from Archilochean poetry and the poet told the facts of Paros and Thasos not only in a sympotic setting, but also before broader audiences and in public events.

Abstract
The comparative analysis of the formulae “the gift from the Mousai” / “the gifts from the Mousai” allows a more meaningful interpretation of Ar - chilochus’ fr. 1 West. The “gift from the Mousai”, in particular, is coherent with the traditional tales about Archilochus’ initiation as it is included in Mnesiepes’ inscription, which offers solid grounds to support the following hypothesis: the narration recorded in the inscription originates from Archilochean poetry and the poet told the facts of Paros and Thasos not only in a sympotic setting, but also before broader audiences and in public events.File in questo prodotto:
