This chapter presents the evolution of the wine sector in Italy from the 1970s to the 2000s. It interprets its evolution in the light of changes in demand, in exchange rates, and in European agricultural policy. It presents a general picture of the structural features of the wine-growing and wine-making sector in Italy and of the characteristics of wine consumption and distribution. An assessment of the international competitiveness of Italian wine and of future prospects concludes.
