Several studies have investigated the role of genetic factors in migraine. Population based studies, twin studies and comorbidity studies have shown that genetic factors play a major role in migraine etiology. Recently, the gene for familial hemiplegic migraine was cloned. This gene, called CACNL1A4, codes for a calcium channel subunit. This finding suggests that migraine, Like other neurological diseases due to a mutation in ion channel genes, is a channelopathy. Additional migraine genes will soon be identified. Within the next few years neurologists will have available a variety of DNA-based diagnostic tests which could be used to accurately assess the status of migraine patients and to prescribe an effective treatment.
