NATURAL LAW, INNOCENCE, PIETY: ROUSSEAU’S SPINOZIAN SUGGESTIONS IN THE DESCRIPTION OF PRE-MORAL LIFE. In the first part of the article, the author investigates the presence of Spinoza, often disguised and hidden, in Rousseau’s work and rebuilds the main interpretations (which are often in conflict with each other) that have been proposed by scholars who have dealt with this issue. In a second step, he tries to show how the real peculiarity of Rousseau’s reading of Spinoza lies in the fact that the comparison is defined essentially by the domain of pre-moral life. This marks his originality among the contemporary recoveries of the Dutch thinker. This hypothesis is supported by a detailed comparative analysis of three key themes that are directed towards the passage from the state of nature to the civil state: the definition of natural law, the claim of the original innocence and the role of piety.
