The role of intangible assets is essential for the success of companies nowadays and represents an essential competitive advantage, so it was thought important to measure the changes deriving from business combinations or other changes in the scope of consolidation. The following article hypothesizes a correlation between M&A operations and the emergence of intangible assets, and focalizes on the analysis of the impact that different types of business combinations may have on intangible assets and on the return on investments of groups. The survey is carried out by analyzing a sample of companies belonging to the food sector either in production or in distribution, listed on the Milan, Madrid, Paris, Zurich and London Stock Exchanges. Different aspects relating to the emergence of intangible assets are measured for each Stock Exchange and overall. Through the measurement of several indicators and values it is possible to calculate and interpret the different changes in the value of intangibles as a whole and divided into categories and to individuate the operational trends of the analyzed groups in the carrying out of business combinations and other operations and the reasons behind their choices.
