Vocal learning is a rare skill in mammals. In this study, we examined the whistles of a female Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), that was orphaned at an early age and raised in a group of six bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Our results suggests that Risso’s dolphins are capable of vocal learning and that can adjust their communication signals to vocal templates in their environment.

Abstract

Vocal learning is a rare skill in mammals. In this study, we examined the whistles of a female Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), that was orphaned at an early age and raised in a group of six bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Our results suggests that Risso’s dolphins are capable of vocal learning and that can adjust their communication signals to vocal templates in their environment.
