Instead of a survey of their evolution over time, this monograph aims at a sampling of outlooks and positions in different eras and cultures, dealing with theories and visions that have described the experience of theatre and performing arts according to the peculiar condition of the spectator. Chronology then assumes the function of reference and index of changes in social economic, and religious circumstances, within which the phenomenon has taken on sometimes antithetical, often discordant values. “Between nature and culture”, on the basis of its specific tradition and in the light of scientific research on conscious experience, the ideal horizon ideal can be defined to investigate a mode of human behavior which, because of its non-ordinary quality, may be able to contribute to a more comprehensive approach to reality.
