The Mercian portion of the interlinear gloss to the so-called Rushworth Gospel has long been considered as an original work, except for its Mark portion, which is recognized as a copy of the earlier Northumbrian gloss to the Lindisfarne Gospel. This article presents evidence suggesting that the Matthew portion of the Rushworth gloss may actually be a copy of an earlier translation and that this earlier model cannot be identified with the Lindisfarne gloss, contrary to what other researchers have previously maintained.
