Les larmes de Suzanne. La sensibilité entre moralité et pathologie dans "La Religieuse" de Diderot

The novel La Religieuse represents a crucial moment in Diderot’s philosophical reflection on sensibility. The work’s narrative construction, in particular the apparent contradiction between Suzanne the character and Suzanne the narrator, can be seen as a conscious application of the doctrine of sensibility developed by the Montpellier school. According to those vitalists, the active side of sensibility should be studied through its pathological manifestations which, by over-stimulating the physical organism, bring out its moral implications. This close link between the psychopathological and the moral aspects of sensibility can be seen in the representation of tears, which are the most important demonstration of the mysterious link between body and soul. Le roman La Religieuse représente un moment crucial de la réflexion philosophique de Diderot sur la sensibilité. La construction narrative de La Religieuse, en particulier la contradiction apparente entre le personnage de Suzanne et la Suzanne narratrice, peut être considérée comme une application romanesque consciente de la doctrine de la sensibilité formulée par les auteurs de l’École de Montpellier. Selon les vitalistes, l’aspect actif de la sensibilité doit être examiné à partir de sa manifestation pathologique qui, sur-stimulant l’organisation physique, rend plus évidente la résonnance morale. Ce lien étroit entre l’aspect physico-pathologique et l’aspect moral de la sensibilité se retrouve dans la représentation des larmes, lesquelles sont la manifestation privilégiée du lien mystérieux entre le corps et l’âme.
