Dio Chrysostom’s specular orations On Trust and On Distrust (no. 73 and 74 ) share the assumption that one must not give trust (pistis) to others, and must avoid being entrusted with any responsibility on behalf of others. To demonstrate this thesis, Dio presents a wide selection of exemplary anecdotes of historical and mythological content, which he derives mostly from the tradition of the ancient schools of rhetoric – though often introducing new tropes and motifs, or reusing traditional ones in a quite original way.

Abstract
Dio Chrysostom’s specular orations On Trust and On Distrust (no. 73 and 74 ) share the assumption that one must not give trust (pistis) to others, and must avoid being entrusted with any responsibility on behalf of others. To demonstrate this thesis, Dio presents a wide selection of exemplary anecdotes of historical and mythological content, which he derives mostly from the tradition of the ancient schools of rhetoric – though often introducing new tropes and motifs, or reusing traditional ones in a quite original way.File in questo prodotto:
