Anche l’esegesi spirituale, però, deve basarsi su una conoscenza e comprensione approfondita della lettera del testo e nell’espistolario Gerolamo sottolinea spesso che per un commentatore l’ispirazione non basta e non ci si può improvvisare esegeti, ma c’è bisogno di un lungo e approfondito studio. Even the spiritual exegesis, is based on a knowledge and a thorough understanding of the letter of the text. In his correspondence Jerome often emphasizes the fact that for a commentator, inspiration is not enough : the process enabling one to become a specialist in exegesis is long and difficult.
