The volume provides the current situation of the sociology of military organizations, mainly centered upon the main structural aspects and changes occurred and in progress within armed forces at global as well as national level. It stresses the main challenges for the armed forces of these first decades, presenting current advanced research products from most famous and accredited scholars and academics all around the world. It covers a variety of subjects, from historical excursus of studies prior to contemporary research, interpretive models and theoretical approaches, civil-military relations including issues surrounding democratic control of the armed forces, military culture, professional training, conditions and problems of minorities in the armed forces, new insights to technological development toward so-called cyborg warriors, new forms of leadership and changes in soldier's identity and organisational culture, structural changes and new missions and functions since the end of the Cold War.
