The aim of this paper is to analyze an aspect of the interwar debate about national identity, i.e. the controversy over the Geto-Dacian religion that involved, at a distance of about twenty years, Vasile Pârvan (Getica. O protoistorie a Daciei, București, Cultura Națională, 1926) and Lucian Blaga (Getica, “Sæculum”, I, 1943, 4, p. 3–24). The analysis will show how the criticism that the philosopher brings to the interpretations by the historian addresses, at its core, the absolutisation and the distortions of such interpretations by the aggressive “thracomaniac” ideology that underlines the rise of Romanian nationalism in the 30s-40s. Deconstructing certain hypotheses of the “master”, Blaga undermines the legitimacy of the deleterious interpretations of his – in fact, unwanted – “disciples”. To the notion of an “offensive” autochthonous spirituality promoted by the most belligerent right-winged intellectuals and ideologists, Blaga opposed his vision of a more “defensive”, retractile, “Romanianness”.
