Music has always tried to imitate water: river or sea, shower, rain, tempest, source or fountain. The German Lied has the same aim and ‘rethinks’ the sound of water at the piano. The aim of the present essay is to focus upon the richness of the history of the Lied in images of water: a number of occurrences demonstrate the growth of a tradition based upon an effective and multiform symbolism of water: Schubert, Loewe, Brahms and other composers used such symbolism with great imagination and nuance, and through it they also developed a more modern composition modality for piano.

Abstract
Music has always tried to imitate water: river or sea, shower, rain, tempest, source or fountain. The German Lied has the same aim and ‘rethinks’ the sound of water at the piano. The aim of the present essay is to focus upon the richness of the history of the Lied in images of water: a number of occurrences demonstrate the growth of a tradition based upon an effective and multiform symbolism of water: Schubert, Loewe, Brahms and other composers used such symbolism with great imagination and nuance, and through it they also developed a more modern composition modality for piano.File in questo prodotto:
