A year after the event, the essay points out and analyzes the case of the viral spread and hypertextual proliferation of the photo of A(y)lan Kurdi, the 3-year Kurdish-Syrian refugee found lifeless on the morning of September 2nd 2015 over Bodrum beach, Turkey. The involuntary transformation of the picture into an Internet meme is addressed, after the countless remixes and remakes that have been made worldwide in order to pay homage to the child. The case seems to confirm how the memetic format has become increasingly important, and “intrusive”, over online and offline discourses.

Abstract

A year after the event, the essay points out and analyzes the case of the viral spread and hypertextual proliferation of the photo of A(y)lan Kurdi, the 3-year Kurdish-Syrian refugee found lifeless on the morning of September 2nd 2015 over Bodrum beach, Turkey. The involuntary transformation of the picture into an Internet meme is addressed, after the countless remixes and remakes that have been made worldwide in order to pay homage to the child. The case seems to confirm how the memetic format has become increasingly important, and “intrusive”, over online and offline discourses.
