Cemeteries are a cultural heritage of extraordinary importance for society regarding the historicalarchitectural peculiarities of the buildings, as well as for the ecologicalenvironmental value of the green areas belonging to the burial places. The monumental cemeteries of Turin, Staglieno in Genoa, Campo Verano in Rome and abroad, among the most interesting in France, the PèreLachaise Cemetery in Paris are well known for these characteristics. The City of Turin has set up a special “Commission for the guarantee of the quality of the cemetery works” for a correct management and safeguard of its cemetery areas, and in general for urban planning and new cemetery construction. During the current mandate, the Commission has embarked on a cultural activity about various cemetery themes with the involvement of scholars, professionals and operators in the sector, opening up moments of study and discussion to citizens. In this regard, the Commission has organized a cycle of Conferences on “The cemeteries of Turin: a heritage of art, culture and environment” held at the Castello del Valentino in Turin.
