Eschilo, il Filottete e la conquista di Lemno. Una testimonianza contemporanea.

Eschilo portò sulla scena i miti connessi con l’isola di Lemnos, principalmente quelli relativi a Filottete e alla saga delle donne lemnie. Queste vicende non ricordano solo un intreccio mitico ma descrivono anche, attraverso il racconto poetico, una circostanza che è già pienamente storica. Nel secondo venticinquennio del V secolo, infatti, gli Ateniesi erano giunti a Lemnos e avevano già avviato un insediamento stabile. Il presente contributo, dedicato all’analisi del nucleo tematico relativo a Filottete, intende attirare l’attenzione sul pubblico seduto a teatro, che è il vero protagonista storico delle azioni mitiche descritte sulla scena. La metodologia di ricerca tenta di ricostruire la perduta tragedia eschilea, ma soprattutto fa il punto sulla parallela documentazione materiale che proviene dall’isola e che non ha ottenuto finora la giusta valorizzazione all’interno del dibattito critico. Aeschylus staged myths connected with the island of Lemnos, mainly those related to Philoktetes and the saga of Lemnian women. These stories not only recall a mythical plot, but also describe, by means of poetic tale, an occurrence that at Aeschylus’ times was already part of history: in the second quarter of the fifth century BC, the Athenians had come to Lemnos and began establishing a permanent settlement. The present contribution focuses on the analysis of the core theme of Philoktetes’ myth and aims at drawing attention to the audience watching the play, which was the real historical subject of the mythical actions represented on the stage. This paper not only attempts at reconstructing the Aeschylus’ lost play, but it also takes into account coeval material evidence from the island which has so far been neglected. This comprehensive approach – combining both textual and material evidence – provides new information which gives us a broader understanding of the tragedy.
