This work deals with an investigation on the freshwater turtles inhabiting the Pellerina urban Park, carried out in 1997. All specimens observed demonstrated to belong to Trachemys scripta elegans and were presumably abandoned after having grown too large for being kept in the small plastic aquaria they were bought with. The population, however large (142 adults of the two sexes, 14 juveniles), does not apparently set any real conservation problem. These specimens do not seem to compete with any other native vertebrate species for either food or other resources, they do not reproduce and depend on artificial food supply for their living. This almost entirely adult population might be used to set an educational program for secondary school students, centered on conservation as well as on terrapin biology
