In the framework of geometric theories of interacting fields, we discuss the notions of energy flow, partial energy flow, energy-momentum tensors and stress tensors. We investigate their role in formulating the natural conservation laws. Application is given to the case of unconstrainecl geometric theories of the gravitational field, whereby canonical tensors, associated to the choice of the dynamical connection, may be defined.
