Some recent results about the existence and the physical role of Poincaré-Cartan forms in higher-order Lagrangian theories are reviewed. The notions of energy-density flow, energy-momentum tensors and the related superpotentials are discussed. It is also shown that Poincaré-Cartan forms help in constructing a generalized formalism à la ADM.
