The notion of formal connection is introduced in order to define covariant derivative operators which are suited to replace the standard formal derivatives. The concept is first introduced in coordinate notation. Intrinsic characterizations in terms of principal fibrations and as splittings of suitable exact sequences of bundles are extensively discussed. Relations with previously known objects are also shortly investigated.
