The article pretends to reflect on the role that education has historically had until now in the construction of national imaginaries about citizenship; in particular, it is proposed to study how education is currently influencing or contributing to the construction of intercultural citizenship in Ecuador. To achieve its objectives, the article makes an analysis of the legal regulations, curricular documents and textbooks that concern education for citizenship in different periods of Ecuadorian history, highlighting the imaginaries about the indigenous and Afro-descendant populations that are built in the educational context, and the value that has been given to cultural difference as a constitutive element of the country. The article concludes by establishing the limits currently presented by education for citizenship in Ecuador, and raising the need to overcome them from the perspective of the real construction of an intercultural citizenship.
