The paper offers an introduction, in a semiotic perspective, to the use of stylized faces in online communication, aiming to show in particular the differences between the various cases of “smileys”, especially emoticons and emojis, which are commonly considered as similar semiotic devices. Great care is devoted to the philology of sources. Some materials are presented for the first time in Italian.
